Mahé Island is the largest island in the Seychelles and is home to the International Airport and the capital, Victoria. Measuring just 17 miles by 5 miles, it has lush, tropical mountains rising to around 3000 feet. The island is home to almost 90% of the total population reflecting Seychelles' diverse ethnicity and descent from African, Indian, Chinese and European populations.
Mahé remains unspoiled and undeveloped and exploring the island is highly recommended. The ‘wild south’ in particular features superb scenery combined with spectacular flora and fauna and pristine beaches. A full day trip will introduce you to the Botanical Gardens, Mission Lodge (the ancient ruins of a school for slave children in a fairy-tale setting beneath a `living cathedral' of towering Dragon's Blood trees), Cap Lazare Nature Reserve (home to one of the largest land tortoises' colonies of the islands) and Port Launay, one of the Seychelles' most pristine marine parks.
Mahé is also the hub for island-hops and day excursions to neighbouring islands such as Praslin, Cerf Island, Moyenne Island, Sainte Anne Marine Park and all other islands within the Seychelles.
