Turtle Watching

There are two turtle species, the hawksbill and green turtle, who have made Desroches their home and come back year after year to lay their eggs on the island’s soft sandy beaches. The island’s turtle programme will ensure the protection of these amazing creatures, which will, in turn, increase the island’s turtle numbers and better the health of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

During the months of October through to January, Desroches welcomes hawksbill nesting activity on the north eastern side of the island which also houses the island’s lighthouse. During the months of February to September, green turtles visit the island. Vegetation growth is key for the green turtle when selecting a nesting spot at night, but being less sensitive to sound they may lay anywhere on the island, although they tend to favour the south west beaches.

Diving

The deep waters offshore of Desroches have a rich and diverse marine life. There are a large number of easily accessible reefs and coral outcrops which offer a host of unforgettable snorkelling and diving experiences. There are no less than 14 classified dive sites including the amazing ‘Desroches Drop’ or the ‘The Canyon’, a mysterious labyrinth of unusual caves and columns. Sites such as The Aquarium and Madame Zabre offer the very best in snorkelling with opportunities to even sight a turtle (or two) gliding between schools of multi-coloured fish. Dive sites are no further than 20 minutes away by boat.
